The PR industry has evolved throughout the decades, helping organizations stand out by implementing various public relations strategies for modern times. In the lens of the COVID-19 pandemic and its disruption of daily life, organizations and industries in the United States had to adjust to the current social and political climate.


As marketing and public relations industries continue to merge, organizations have been able to use new and different strategies to be successful in a constantly changing environment. Here is my pick of trends that will dominate the public relations industry next year:


1. Take advantage of influencer marketing. Organizations can collaborate with social media influencers who already engage with large online communities. The use of influencers as promoters of a product or organization adds a human element to a campaign. It takes advantage of the trustworthy relationship already established between the influencer and their audience. This strategy incorporates user-generated content and an interactive platform for the target audience to share feedback with the organization.

2. Go beyond taking a stand. In the current cultural environment defined by racial injustice and political division, it’s important for organizations to establish where they stand. Many have chosen to publicly support causes through their own efforts or through supporting social justice organizations. While it’s great for organizations to take a stand in society, it’s important for them to live up to it through their actions. If organizations can talk the talk, they must also walk the walk.

3. Focus on ethical practice and communication. Audiences become increasingly distrustful of the media and marketing campaigns. Therefore, organizations must work hard to establish trust through the use of effective strategy and clear purpose. They should focus on engaging their audiences in authentic and transparent communication frequently. Organizations should analyze their audiences and target their messages with organizational ethics in mind to prevent future crises.


These are just a few trends that will influence the public relations practices of organizations in 2021. If these strategies are used correctly, organizational campaigns have the power to make a huge difference in the world.
